Consejo is only seven miles north of Corozal Town and a 5 minute boat ride across the Bay to Chetumal, Mexico.
The village of Consejo is a small and diverse community only seven miles north of Corozal Town. It is comprised of Consejo Shores, a reputable and well-established community which has become especially popular as a retirement destination for expats for locals and expatriates, and the village of Consejo. The community was formerly named Smuggler's Savanna, because it was used for the illegal trafficking of goods from Mexico to Belize, since it is only a 5 minute boat ride to cross the Bay. The locals have even been known to tell a few stories about Cadillacs being floated across on oil drums! The village has a rich Mayan history, with two unexcavated Mayan sites within a mile of the main village. Consejo is now a community that survives on fishing and the wealth of retirees. It is a great place for travellers to get "off the beaten path".
Consejo has two bar/restaurants - New Millennium Restaurant and Buccaneers Palapa serve up Belizean meals. Maria's Grocery sells basic provisions and may save you a trip into Corozal Town.
Things to Do
Consejo Shores is a private, planned community with seafront parks, 9-hole golf course and a community centre. Corozal, the closest town, has an airport with frequent daily scheduled flights to many areas of Belize, daily water taxi from Corozal to Ambergris Caye and a bus terminal for access to many destinations in Mexico including Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun along the Mayan Riviera. In addition, our location is conveniently close to major “North American” style shopping malls in Chetumal, Mexico.
